Setting:

The Legend of Korra takes place several decades after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the hundred year war. The world is a very Asian setting, and is currently in its industrial age. There are cars, radios, and recently bi-planes were invented.

The world is divided up into a handful of nations. Particularly the Fire Nation, Earth Kingdom, and the Southern and Northern Water Tribes. Also, there is Republic City, a city state that's independent from these nations with a smattering of people from all of them. A melting pot not unlike the United States. It was created by Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko from the former Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom. Both of which have statues commemorating their efforts in the city, as well as Air Temple Island where Aang's airbending successors live.

Despite the peace that has been largely enjoyed, the world has recently been thrown into turmoil. The Earth Queen in the Earth Kingdom was murdered by a secret organization known as the Red Lotus, and has thrown that nation into chaos. But on the bright side, the Air Nation has been reborn. Nonbenders having gained airbending abilities due to the fact that spirits have entered the world again. The once closed spirit portals having been reopened by Avatar Korra. Right now, there is much uncertainty in the world.

This world also revolves around something known as bending. The power to harness the elements of Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. Benders from each nation that is named after the element, can bend said element, but that element only. However, not everyone is blessed with these abilities. Even so, they are integral part of life. Bending is not only used for battle, but also entertainment such as probending, and even plays a role in every day life. Such as firebenders using their lightning generation to create power for a city.

Bending itself is very much like martial arts, with the exception of having an element to control as well. It is meant to be an extension of a bender's body.

Firebenders are capable of producing fire with their own chi, or life energy. They can maniuplate the flames in varying degrees, from short bursts to immense infernos. Some that have mastered the art can propel themselves through the air, generate or redirect lightning, or even create explosions with their mind in very rare cases. The benders of the Fire Nation are often hot headed and aggressive.

The benders of the Water Tribes can manipulate the water that is around them, but can't create it. They can create massive waves, throw streams of water, or even turn water to ice in a variety of ways. Many waterbenders also have the ability to heal, and rarely they can bloodbend or manipulate the water in a person's body. Though bloodbending is a forbidden art. The people of the Water Tribes are determined and close knit.

Earth benders manipulate the ground and rock beneath their feet. Having the ability to throw boulders, create walls of earth, or in rare cases they can bend metal that contains impurities or even turn ground into destructive lava. Some earthbenders have also demonstrated the ability to see with the vibrations in the earth and can detect things underground. The people of the Earth Kingdom are sturdy, strong, and resilient.

Finally, the airbenders traditionally are a peaceful and pacifistic group. It was what left them vulnerable when they were wiped out by the Fire Nation almost two centuries ago. They were reduced to a single individual that has since become a small family, but has finally grown with the addition of new airbenders. However, things have changed with the addition of new blood. And while they retain some of the old traditions, its clear that they are not quite the same as before. Recently taking on the responsibility of helping to bring peace to the world instead of living in seclusion as they once had. Airbenders are capable of manipulating the air around them. They can great massive gusts of winds, wind funnels, or even glide with the aid of a glider. They are also a very deeply spiritual people, and air is also known as the element of freedom.

Another very important part of this world is the Avatar. The bridge between spirits and the keeper of peace and balance. The Avatar was created when a young man, Wan, fused with the spirit of life, Raava. This was done in order to prevent darkness and chaos from dominating the world due to the spirit of darkness, Vaatu. Ever since Wan's death, the Avatar cycle has continued with each of his reincarnations.

The Avatar is the only person in the world that is able to bend all four of the elements and utilize Raava's power in the Avatar State. A state of being where the Avatar is both their most powerful and most vulnerable. The Avatar is reborn in a cycle between each of the nations. From the Fire Nation, the the Air Nation, to the Water Tribes, and then the Earth Kingdom before starting over again. The current Avatar is Korra, a girl from the Southern Water Tribe. During her time as Avatar she has strove to maintain peace and balance. Perhaps her most notable act thus far as Avatar was perhaps the opening of the spirit portals, which now allows spirits and humans to freely pass between the spirit world and the physical world. Meaning that humans and spirits have to coexist like they did over ten thousand years ago. Recently she also brought down several powerful benders from the secret Red Lotus organization who intended to dispose of all the world leaders. They were only successful in bringing down the Earth Queen, leaving the Earth Kingdom in a very chaotic mess that has yet to be resolved.

Personality:

At first glance, Tonraq might come off as a rather imposing man. He's huge and a powerful bender, but really he's a gentle spirit. Not only is he the courageous chief of the Southern Water Tribe, but he's also a husband and a father. The father of the Avatar, no less.

For many years, he has lived in the South, running from his troubled past. He was born the prince of the Northern Water Tribe, and was expected to be chief one day. However, that changed when barbarians attacked the tribe and he was forced to pursue them into the spiritual forest that he ultimately destroyed. This resulted in his shameful banishment, which he would later learn was orchestrated by his younger brother so that he could seize the throne. Tonraq then moved to the South to start over, marrying his wife Senna, and planning to live a simple life. However, that life become a lot less simple when his only daughter was discovered to be the Avatar. He knew from that point on, that his baby girl was no longer just his. She belonged to the world, a world that would need her.

Despite this, he still planned to give Korra as normal a childhood as possible. As a result, he never told her about his shamed past, until much later that is. But then again plans changed when a terrorist group, the Red Lotus, tried to kidnap Korra. Through his efforts along with Chief Sokka, Lord Zuko, and Tenzin, they managed to protect her. But it was then decided that Korra had to live in a compound, locked away from the world, for her own safety. It wasn't an easy decision for Tonraq, but it was better than letting his daughter go through that again, or worse. Thus from the time she was 4 to 17, Tonraq had to share raising his daughter with the White Lotus organization who protected her in the compound. Which was a bit difficult since he was not always able to see her as much as he would like, and she was usually busy with her bending training. However, there was little other choice in the matter as far as he could see.

His decisions would later come back to bite him as Korra lashed out at him for keeping things from her and being responsible for locking her away in the compound. Despite his daughter's backlash during those occasions or any, Tonraq has never raised his voice in anger at his daughter. Even though she can certainly be frustrating and often makes poor choices. He has come to realize that she had to make those choices on her own. Even so, he's always been there to support her, guide her, and protect her if necessary. She might be the Avatar, but she's still his baby girl, and he loves her more than anything. After all, family is of the utmost importance in the Water Tribes.

Even with his younger brother, Unalaq, despite the tension between them, they're still family. Tonraq was disgruntled with his brother ever since his banishment and voiced his displeasure when he came to visit during a festival. However, even as Unalaq provoked civil war, Tonraq refused to attack his brother. That is until he found out about his betrayal. It was then that they fought, a battle which Tonraq ultimately lost. However, despite it all, he retained his resolve and pleaded with his brother when learning of his plans to become the Dark Avatar.

However, even if Korra doesn't need him, Tonraq always makes sure that he's available to help her. Though he's come to know when to back off and let her do what she needs to do. Even when Korra decided to give herself up to Zaheer, and being alarmed and saddened by this, he still supported her decision. Though he was there to back her up when she needed him.

But, despite his efforts, Korra still ended up badly injured. He had held her broken body in his arms, for a moment... he had thought he lost her. His greatest fears realized as it seemed he was about to lose her, the man couldn't help his tears. But miraculously Korra was saved by Suyin's efforts. His daughter coming back from the brink of death, and he promised her that he would never let her go again. Unfortunately, he had to watch as Korra struggled with her physical and emotional wounds. A truly heartbreaking time for him, he has done as he promised, and has never left her side. Ready to see his daughter through this difficult time for her.

These have been some of the darkest times in his life. His failure to free the South from the North, and Korra's near death experience at the hands of Zaheer. Feeling as though he had failed his tribe and Korra. Unable to protect his little girl from the dangers of the world, he secretly holds blame for the terrible things that Korra has had to endure. Now, more than ever, he's determined to protect her.

Even though he's a big softie, that doesn't discount the fact that Tonraq is also a powerful and formidable man. He will fight fiercely for those that he cares about, and what he believes in. Whether it be protecting Korra, or the Water Tribe, or fighting to help save the entire world. He puts all of his efforts into these very things, but never loses his moral ground. He's an honorable man, well grounded, as well as kind and patient. He rarely loses his temper, and thus usually maintains a very cool head. Though he can be notoriously stubborn, as was shown he was adamantly opposed to Unalaq becoming Korra's teacher. He's also good natured, and has a sense of humor. He doesn't have any qualms teasing others, especially those he likes. As was shown when he gave Mako a heard time upon first meeting him.

As a world leader, Tonraq is well acquainted with many of the other prominent figures in the world. Including, but not limited to, Lord Zuko, President Raiko, Tenzin, and Lin Beifong. He has a deep respect for them, and has shown to work well with them as well. Tonraq has shown himself to be a capable and charismatic leader. Having the ability to gain respect, as well as having a very commanding presence.

Appearance: X, X, X

Abilities: Tonraq is a master waterbender who incorporates his brute strength into the art. His style is more power based than some other benders, using heavy blows as opposed to the more elegant styles of many other waterbenders. He uses a wide range of techniques from water whips around his arms, to swirling blasts of water, ice slides, and heavy ice spears around his hand. He can even use his waterbending and arm strength alone to scale cliffs. The downside to waterbending is that without the presence of water, his bending is useless, thus he often carries two large skins of water with him when he knows he's going to be in a fight. He can bend any form of water, be it liquid, ice, or vapor.

Physically he is very strong and has a high endurance, making him a formidable opponent even if he's just using his fists. Despite his large and muscular size, he is still very quick and agile. Able to perform acrobatic feats that rivals any other highly skilled bender, though he has been proven not to be quite as proficient as his brother, Unalaq. He is also skilled in using Water Tribe weapons such as spears and machetes. Also, as chief of the Southern Water Tribe, Tonraq is a very capable and charismatic leader.

Inventory: He's coming in with only the clothes he's wearing.

Suitability: As a Water Tribe warrior, Tonraq has seen his share of battle. This includes civil water between the two water tribes, to fighting dark spirits, and even terrorists such as the Red Lotus. He is no stranger to combat and is quite skilled at it, not to mention a very capable leader. With Korra also being in Keeliai, he will be driven to protect her as well.

Suite: Although he's a waterbender, I believe that Tonraq's personality best suits him for the Earth Sector. He is a sturdy and resilient man who is also hardworking, honest, and fair. Not to mention a serious, seasoned, and mature man. He would fit in well with the people of the Earth Sector, and would give the them the respect they deserve.

Third Person (Prose):

While settling into this strange place, Tonraq had allowed his thoughts to wander. Thinking back on what he last remembered before arriving here on the back of a giant turtle. The ceremony on Air Temple Island.

It had been a bittersweet moment. A time to celebrate. Not only for Jinora's anointment as an airbending master, but also the rebirth of a nation nearly extinct and the new role they would play in the world. It was a truly historic moment, one that he had been proud to witness.

However, then just as now, his thoughts kept going back to his daughter, Korra. The fact that she was in a wheelchair, recovering from an attack that he couldn't protect her from, was heavy on his heart. But what hurt him even more was the emotional damage she had obviously suffered. Her eyes told all. The sadness was there despite the moments that she forced a smile, and the puffy dark circles under her eyes told him that she had been crying. Even during the ceremony, he hadn't missed the tear that rolled down Korra's cheek. It tore at every fiber of his being to see her that way.

But at least, she was alive.

He had been so frightened by the prospect of losing her.

Still, he couldn't shake the feeling that he had failed her. He was her father, and it was his job to make sure she didn't get hurt. No matter how many times she insisted that she didn't need him or that she could take care of herself. She would never stop being that spunky bright eyed little girl to him.

Here, she has no idea what will happen to her when she gets home. And Tonraq has no intention of telling her. At least he can protect her from that. For now.

Network:

[You know... getting use to all of that technology that keeps cropping up back home is one thing, but this is ridiculous. Everything was explained to him, and he knew the basics but... Tonraq still fumbles a bit with the console. A deep frown on his face as he does so, which shows when he finally activates the video feed.

He then blinks once upon realizing that its broadcasting. Then, clearing his throat, he begins to speak in that deep voice of his.]

I am Chief Tonraq of the Southern Water Tribe, and I just recently arrived.

[This is hardly the best time for him to be here, but it looks like he has to deal with it.]

I've been told that others from my world are also here. I don't suppose any of you would know my daughter, Korra.
